AOS Path to Glory - Prelude
“What is thy bidding, m’lord? Has the Lady given the word to march?”
Long claws scrape across the banquet table, a slab of old wood laid over piles and piles of skulls. The clawed hand of the warden flicks aside several severed arms and legs, mutilated, gnawed to the bone.
Last night’s festivities had been a joyous occasion indeed: a feast held in honor of the Lady of the castle, and of her decree that the court ride to war against the rising barbarian tide. The wine had flowed. The musicians had played late. Several nobles still slumber in the corners of the hall, draped in their finery.
Bloated, half-naked things curled among the bones, snoring in the dark. Bloody feet step over them walking toward the cobwebbed, rot-chewed chair at the end of the hall.
A deep bow concludes the courtesy. “Are we ready to depart, my King?”
The horror of a visage, disfigured by hundreds of battles, turns its piercing yellow eyes toward the commander of his horde.
“The word has gone out. The Lady expects us upon the morrow. Rouse this noble pack and bid them ready themselves.” A pause. “I will see to my Pegasus myself.”
Slowly, the Ghoul King rises and shuffles toward the exit of the great hall. Behind him the Cardinal kicks the nearest sleeper square in the ribcage.
Outside, the starlit night and the rising moon cast a faint light upon the ruins of what was once a castle. Broken towers. A collapsed gate. Banners that are only dried patches of skin caught on splintered beams.
He enters the stall. He walks to his noble steed and lays a hand upon its flank.
“We will bring glory to our Lady of the Great Hall. This crusade shall bring honor to us – and enemies aplenty for you to pick from.”
The rotting flesh flaps and sways with the movement of the Terrorgheist’s head. It raises its ruined neck high into the sky, and looses a shriek that scatters the carrion birds for miles.
The King nods. “We march at first light.”
This month of July my local club has started an Age of Sigmar Path to Glory campaign. And while I am really not an “army wargamer” and tend to lose motivation even half-way through painting a small warband, the campaign is a welcome boost to fully flesh out my Flesh-Eaters (eh? EH??!).
We are starting with 1000p as the starting army size, and will eventually build up to 2000p until next year, with a hopefully epic final all-in battle or some crazy stuff. Looking very much forward to it.
List-wise I have committed early to a monster-heavy army, I might wield at the end Terrorgheists and Zombie Dragons, a huge block of horrors and some Ghouls to soak up damage mid-board. Currently I am converting / bashing my Ghoul King on Terrorgheist, who will be my central character / hero of this campaign.
As a starting list I am running the Ghoul King on Terrorgheist, a Cardinal, two units of 3 Horrors and 20 Ghouls and the trusted Charnel Throne. I expect more of the same, maybe with some utility Morbheg Knights eventually.
Lore-wise it’s of course a wink to Arthurian legends, and while I’ll let myself be surprised by game outcomes to shape the further narrative, there is already a plot twist in my head to unveil who this mysterious “Lady” might be, that is giving a whole army of noble crusading knights orders to march.
More updates will follow as the campaign progresses, until then have some images of my horrors I painted last year.
The horrors persist, but so do I.
